NORM

DESCRIPTION

The light installation NORM / NORMPACK 208 is composed of different rectangular plastic light fixtures made from industrially manufactured single-use plant trays. Through light other characteristics of the thermo formed plastic product are aestheticized and staged in an unusual way. NORM versions are different arrangements of the light fixtures on the ground or in combination with a metal shelf which emphasizes the industrial background of storage and functions as a large reflector at the same time.

MANUFACTURE & STRUCTURE

All light fixtures are systematically built out of white translucent single plant trays and stuck together by transparent cable ties. Inside the fixtures individually programmed Neopixel LEDs are fading in and out with different rhythm and speed. Thus, an organic effect is achieved in which the light fixtures somehow seem to “breath” like different characters (e.g. nervous-quick, calm-slow).

BACKGROUND

An experimental and artistical project inspired to focus on randomly found objects and on special material characteristics. The plant packaging trays fascinated me with their lighting properties and specific texture.

Normpack® is a quality mark for plant packaging and ‘the standard’ for single-use plant trays. About 180 million Normpack® trays are produced every year (see https://normpack.nl/en/about-normpack).
