DESCRIPTION
BELT is a lighting tool in form of a decorative pendant luminaire that facilitates various usage scenarios at a dining table (e.g. dinner or work). Since there is not always a need for global light or dimming on the whole surface of a table BELT defines precise zones of light and darkness through two manually and continuously movable flaps. Thus BELT enhances a more conscious usage of light and the sensibility of its perception by celebrating the aesthetics of darkness.
MANUFACTURE & STRUCTURE
BELT consists of only three laser-cut aluminium sheets (0.8 mm, untreated) that have been bent into an oversized hinge. A thin guide wire holds all parts together, provides the tension (flap position) and also serves as a loop for suspension over the webbing.
BACKGROUND
BELT was developed as my bachelor project in 2019. It was strongly influenced by the Japanese essay In Praise of Shadows by Junichiro Tanizaki. The project goal was to design a luminaire that celebrates the aesthetics of darkness and to find a practical field of its applicationion.
FIELD OF APPLICATION
Flexible forms of living and open floor plans allow rooms and their interior to be used for various purposes at the same time. A dining table for example is used as an area for dining, work and a lot of other scenarios. In this context zones of light and darkness can support customers’ needs and requirements.
